What is the Board’s commitment to Health, Safety & Welfare?

The Board of Biffa consider that health and safety is of, at least, equal importance in comparison to any other aspect of business management and is committed to promoting high standards of health, safety and welfare on all of their sites, premises, and in all of their activities.

To achieve this, the Board will:

  • Constantly work towards improving the health and safety culture at all levels within Biffa, using a ‘top down’ and ‘bottom up’ approach where employee engagement and feedback is encouraged and rewarded.

  • Ensure compliance with all relevant legal duties in respect of health and safety at work legislation.

  • Provide adequate resources for planning, provision and maintenance of safe working conditions and a safe system of work.

What are Biffa’s expectations for communication of Health, Safety & Welfare?

Participation and consultation are vital aspects of this policy. Staff are encouraged and expected to:

  • Discuss health, safety and welfare matters with their managers, and company safety, health and environmental coaches who will offer or obtain further expert advice, where necessary.
  • Co-operate at all times; contribute good ideas and improvements; report defects and short falls.

What are Biffa’s objectives for Health, Safety & Welfare?

Biffa believe that all accidents are avoidable and our objective is to plan, control and monitor activities in such a manner so as not to harm anyone, whether directly      or indirectly employed, visitors or members of the     public.

To achieve this Biffa will:

  • Have an overview strategic plan and specific objectives and targets which are updated annually

  • Use Accident Frequency Rate (AFR) as a key performance indicator of health and safety performance.

  • Internally and externally audit their health and safety management systems and implement improvements.

  • To establish safety improvement teams within each division.

  • Provide a prompt response and feedback to issues raised.

  • Will retain certification to OHSAS 18001:2007 and strive for continuous improvement.
