Public safety, the health, safety and well being of all those working with Biffa and the protection of the local and global environment are our highest priorities.
Ian Wakelin, Chief Executive
Our Committment
Biffa is committed to operating without causing harm to any employees, partners, members of the public or the environment. This commitment extends to working with other parties and stakeholders for the overall protection of people and the environment and also towards achieving continuous improvement within Biffa and our industry.
Our current Safety, Health, Environment & Quality Strategy incorporates key Objectives & Targets and Annual Improvement Plans to achieve this.
The Board has set a ceiling on our Accident Frequency Rate (AFR) which it expects all Divisions of the business to help attain. The ceiling has been set with continuous improvement in mind and supports the work of central Government and industry drive for continuous improvement. The Board expects all Divisions to be operating below the ceiling by the end of 2014 and hopes many areas will achieve this sooner having an AFR near zero as soon as possible since our overall goal is naturally to have an accident and injury free workplace.
Our Focus
To give a real focus to our drive for improvement Biffa introduced a themed year concept in 2011. This themed approach gives clarity to the journey and secures greater employee engagement and direction – 2011 is ‘The Year of Design’, 2012 is ‘The Year of Delivery’ and 2013 is ‘The Year of Improvement’. 2014 is 'The Year of Excellence'.
In order to achieve these goals, all Divisions are required to put together their own long term Safety, Health, Environment & Quality strategy in the form of a ‘Commitment Statement’ based on the Group Safety, Health, Environment & Quality strategy and Objectives & Targets.
These statements will be communicated to the Division and subject to regular review, outcomes of these meetings will be communicated on the company intranet ‘BiffaNet’ so as to ensure that all employees are kept up to date on progress and the decisions made.
