Sheffield Forgemasters Case Study
We don't believe in scrap metal
Prior to working with Biffa we went through a stringent tender process because our previous supplier wasn’t providing the service we expect. Despite the fact Biffa hadn’t worked with a steel company before they gave us total confidence that they wouldbe able to meet our needs.
Background
Sheffield Forgemasters International Limited is one of the largest open-die forging companies in the world and the only one of its kind in the UK.
It supplies high-quality products across the world and uses state-of-the-art technology for castings and forgings.
SFIL’s five-year contract with Biffa’s Integrated Waste Management division began in April 2010 and three full-time Biffa staff are now permanently based at the 64-acre site, including a qualified chemist who tests potentially hazardous waste materials on-site to ensure they are disposed of properly.
“Biffa’s aim across all industries is to ensure waste is not a cost, but an asset.”
Edward Pigg, Head of Integrated Waste Management, Biffa
The Biffa Approach to delivering more
- We are keen to promote the value of waste, ensuring it is a benefit not a cost.
- Our Integrated Waste Management team provides a service which allows customers to achieve their zero waste-to-landfill ambitions as well as get maximum levels of rebate on recycling.
- We are the market leader in terms of capacity in Mixed Recycling Centres in London, Manchester and Birmingham.
- Our contract managers develop close partnerships with our customers to truly tailor-make services.
- Our customers are provided with a full set of documents to ensure sites meet strict legal requirements.
Working with Sheffield Forgemasters
- Sheffield Forgemasters is now diverting an average of 815 tonnes of waste from landfill each month which is a fantastic achievement. Heavy industry is not something people might associate with recycling but this goes to show what you can achieve with Integrated Waste Management. Forgemasters is setting an example to all industries.
- In less that a year of working together we have not only reduced costs to the business but introduced a new source of revenue, resulting in a combined savings and income total of £250,000. That is our aim across all industries – to ensure waste is not a cost, but an asset.
- To achieve our aims we have people permanently on-site – we are not an arms-length collection service. And in Forgemasters we could not have asked for a more receptive client, which is why we have been able to make such a significant difference in a relatively short period.
