Drax Power Station, the largest power-plant in the UK, has ordered 250 big red bins from waste management company, Biffa. It is the single largest order of these unique recycling stations that Biffa has secured to date and the new contract will assist Drax in diverting its waste from landfill.
Biffa’s IWM (Integrated Waste Management) department has worked closely with Drax to make it even easier to recycle the majority of waste items produced on site that include: bottles, cans, paper and card using the big red bins.
All types of DMR waste can be recycled in the big red bins so there is no need for businesses segregate their waste, saving time and money.
As Drax seeks to reduce waste and boost its recycling, up to 1.5 tonnes of waste will be collected every week in the big red bins now installed across the site in North Yorkshire.
Commenting on the news, Bob Barltrop, Biffa group sales and marketing director, said: “It is encouraging to see more businesses like Drax and Biffa working in partnership. It is a clear demonstration of the importance that both industries place upon environmental responsibility.
It also makes very good business sense for Drax: Biffa’s big red bin service is an easy way for the business to fix waste management costs. Coupled with the increasing costs of landfill tax, integrated contracts such as this have become the most economical way for businesses of all sizes to manage their recycling.”
Nigel Burdett, Drax head of environment, said: “The big red bin service is an excellent way to manage the waste produced across our site. We have already established a strong track record for waste management across the business, recycling 84% of just over 4,300 tonnes of waste generated on the site last year. Using the red bins will help us achieve even better performance in this area.
We have implemented a ban on waste bins at desks which has really changed people’s behaviour when it comes to recycling. The results speak for themselves, with an additional 57 tonnes of paper, cardboard, plastic and metal cans recycled in the first ten months.”
Once collected, the mixed recycling waste is sorted and segregated at Biffa’s state of the art material recycling facility at Trafford Park. Use of the latest technology and processing equipment means Trafford Park can accept commingled and segregated recyclables sourced from local authorities as well as commercial customers like Drax, processing them to high quality standards.
