Climate Change

What is Biffa doing to adapt to Climate Change?

Global warming is already impacting upon the weather in the UK and will continue to cause warmer wetter winters, hotter dryer summers, and more frequent extreme weather conditions.  The health and safety of our employees is paramount and elevated temperatures will increase the risk of heat related stress, UV exposure, and dehydration.  We now provide drinking water in an increasing proportion of our vehicle fleet and supply sun block to staff working outside.  We are also reviewing all personal protective equipment to ensure that it is both comfortable and effective when working in elevated temperatures.

Elevated temperatures will increase the public health risks associated with waste management.  The current tendency is for local authorities to reduce waste collection frequencies for household waste but during prolonged periods of high temperature there will be increased risk of vermin, smell, insect infestation and disease, problems that will transfer with the collected waste to any waste treatment process and landfill site receiving the waste.

The risk of business disruption is also increasing. High rainfall incidents will cause flooding of previously unaffected areas and we are assessing all of our locations and infrastructure to determine the future risk of flooding and the potential for mitigation. Storms can disrupt transportation systems, damage buildings and cause treatment plants and landfill sites to close.
