Soil Conditioning Compost
About the product
This product contains Composting Association certified soil conditioner made from recycled composted green and woody plant material. The Publicly Available Specification PAS 100 is a British Standards Institution document that specifies the minimum requirements for the process of composting, the selection of input materials, and the quality of composted materials. This product has been assessed and certified by the Composting Association as conforming with PAS 100 requirements.
How the Product is Made
Recycled green and woody plant materials are composted under a managed process at Biffa's composting sites to produce a well decomposed, crumbly, soil-like product that is a good source of organic matter and can be beneficially applied to most soil types. This process involves a period of rapid decomposition and self-heating followed by a cooler, slower decay of the most resistant forms of plant organic matter. When the composting process is complete, the compost is graded to achieve a suitable particle size.
Selected compost batches are sampled and tested to ensure the product conforms to the compost specification PAS 100 and is fit for the uses recommended here.
Compost Benefits
The benefits of using compost include:
- Improving the soil structure and creating a better plant root environment
- Increasing moisture infiltration and soil moisture holding capacity in light soils
- Providing a variety of nutrients (some in slow release forms) reducing the need for fertilisers
- Providing much organic matter to improve soil structure
- Suppling beneficial, natural bacteria and fungi which assist nutrient uptake and help suppress soil borne diseases
- Improving plant health, from germination, through growth and to maturity
- Improves soil resistance to compaction and erosion
- Controls weeds when coarse particle grades are used as a mulch
