What can I do at home?

  • Use your local recycling banks or kerbside collection. Use the box below to find your local authority by typing in your postcode, which should generate a map. Then click 'Contacting your council' under 'Local Information'.

  • Find second uses for large items like electronic equipment or furniture. Many towns have projects to distribute such items to those in need (ask your local authority).
  • Compost your organic kitchen and garden waste. You may be able to buy a subsidised compost bin from your council.
  • Re-use or recycle all types of suitable rubbish, not just packaging. Particularly you can separate out newspapers, magazines, clothes and junk mail.
  • Think about what you buy in your shopping - can you buy bulk or concentrate items for, say, washing powder?
  • Re-use bags and boxes for your shopping, reducing the need for new carrier bags.
  • Does your retailer offer 'bags for life'?
  • Clear out those old clothes and give them to a charity shop (or a younger brother or sister!)
  • You can reduce the amount of junk mail you receive by contacting the Mailing Preference Service on 0207 291 3310.
  • Could you help a less mobile neighbour to recycle by taking their items to a bank or putting them out on the kerb for collection?
