Food.

In this country we throw away millions of tonnes of food every year, an avoidable waste of energy-packed resources that create harmful greenhouse gases when landfilled.

More and more local authorities are deploying food waste collections that make a useful contribution to recycling performance, help protect the environment, and convert food’s calorific value into green energy.

Biffa’s significant experience of designing, implementing and managing household waste food collection services is utilised by a growing number of local authorities and their residents.

Purpose-built vehicles, coupled with computerised route planning, provide householders with regular, reliable weekly collections of their kitchen caddies.

Hundreds of tonnes of waste food are collected each week for processing at anaerobic digestion (AD) facilities, operated either by Biffa or specialist energy-from-waste partners, which convert it into natural biogas that generates both electricity and heat.

Biffa doubled its waste food processing capabilities after opening the state-of-the-art Poplars facility in the West Midlands in 2011. This added over 100,000 tonnes annual capacity, so providing a destination for the increasing volumes of municipal and commercial food waste.
