Contracts.

A municipal service contractor like Biffa relies on its proven record of delivering efficient, reliable and quality recycling, refuse and cleansing services to win more contracts.

With over 2,500 staff and around 1,000 specialist vehicles, Biffa services nearly two million households across Britain, making almost three million recycling and refuse collections per week.

Its service record has seen a number of local authorities extend or renew their Biffa contracts for up to eight years, while more recently, the company has been appointed by Portsmouth City Council and  was also chosen to operate the joint recycling and refuse contract for of East Hampshire District and Winchester City Council.

Biffa’s successes include helping South Oxfordshire District Council achieve a recycling, reuse and composting rate of 70% during 2010. The council was placed second in Defra’s 2009-2010 league tables (a position reached after just nine months of the new service) and won a LARAC Award for the most improved recycling authority.

The launch of a new service late in 2010 for Vale of White Horse District Council helped it match the recycling performance of its South Oxfordshire partner, while a redesigned service for Surrey Heath Borough Council doubled its 2009-10 recycling, reuse and composting rate to almost 65%, helping it meet its 2025 target almost 15 years early.

In a recent study of local authority kerbside dry recycling by consultants WYG, Biffa had seven council clients in the top 30 dry recycling list for 2009-10, with South Oxfordshire in second place and Stratford-upon-Avon in third. Surrey Heath was the most improved dry recycling local authority in that year, having increased its dry recycling yield by 270%.

In Wales, the Isle of Anglesey County Council regularly vies for the top recycling spot, and has also been adjudged to have the cleanest streets in the nation.
