This section is about Biffa's proposals to develop an energy recovery facility to deal with residual waste in Leicestershire.

It provides information on our proposals and shows how the development of a new energy recovery facility at Biffa's Newhurst Quarry site near Shepshed can recover value from waste that would otherwise be landfilled by using it to create electricity.

Latest Information

Biffa has now formally lodged a planning application for this energy recovery facility with Leicestershire county Council.

The planning application has taken into account requirements and issues raised by local people during our community consultation process. For example :-

  • The helix design feature has been removed from the flue stacks. Several different options were investigated for the colour of the buildings and have been included in the planning application.
  • The access into the site on the A512 is to be improved and traffic lights will be installed. There will be an agreed exclusion zone in Shepshed for heavy goods vehicles.
  • With the old quarry void, initially its edges will be restored and it will be allowed to refill with water. Safety will be a prime consideration. Proposals for the use of the site as a recreational facility will be considered at a later date.
