Biffa Picks up Greggs Dough
6th April 2009
Greggs is working with recycling and waste management specialists Biffa in a bid to help reduce the amount of waste sent to landfill.
With over 1400 shops nationwide, 10 regional bakeries and a central savoury production factory, Greggs now use Biffa for the majority of their recycling, due to Biffa’s expertise in this field. The two companies together are trialling new recycling schemes, the creation of energy from waste, composting, anaerobic digestion and other methods of waste disposal.
Disposing of waste at landfill not only results in the production of greenhouse gases; it is also becoming more and more expensive with year on year increases in Landfill Tax.
Peter Boughton, Group Production Project Manager at Greggs, said, “In line with Our Values, we wish to operate our business responsibly and protect the environment for future generations to enjoy. Our primary aim is to reduce the amount of waste we send to landfill and therefore recycling is paramount. We believe Biffa can help provide us with the solutions we need to do that.”
Peter added, “We are working with Biffa to experiment on new recycling initiatives as well as building on existing schemes. Biffa are providing an excellent service, in particular in providing us with information on the amount of waste resulting from our operational processes and thereby helping us to take action to reduce it.”
Biffa collection director, Nick Gregg added, “Britain needs to stop thinking about waste as something to be thrown away. It can be a valuable resource and much of the material disposed of at landfill could be used to create energy. We’re delighted to be given the chance to work with Greggs to not only help reduce their costs, but to also help Greggs minimise their impact on the environment.”
