Investment Boosts Recycling for Barking Businesses
22nd April 2008
Local businesses can now recover more waste than ever before after an investment of £1.2million in a new recycling centre.
Built by national waste company, Biffa, on its existing site at Maybells Farm, Ripple Road this centre is allowing more and more Barking firms to do their bit for the environment by reducing the amount of rubbish they landfill.
Paul Watkinson, area manager at Biffa, said “In the past, recycling services were difficult to come by, making it hard for companies that wanted to avoid landfilling their waste. But new centres like this are making recycling services available to a greater amount of businesses, meaning they can now recover more than ever before. Not only is that good for the environment, but good for local firms as recycling is cheaper than landfill.”
Biffa’s new facility is able to segregate increased quantities of paper, card, glass, cans and plastic from mixed waste loads. It can process 20-25 tonnes of waste every hour. That’s compared to the 10 tonnes per day that could previously be handled on site.
Paul added, “Local firms are being driven towards recycling partly by increases in landfill tax and the effect of EU Regulations, so its important that facilities such as this are geared up to meet that demand.”
