Packaging regulations

These are the government’s response to the 94/62/EC Directive on Packaging Waste.

The main emphasis of the regulation is to promote recycling and recovery of packaging and to reduce the amount of packaging waste sent to landfill sites. It’s set to target those companies that supply packaging, which they own, to another stage in the packaging chain or to the final user of the packaging.

These regulations target those companies that meet the threshold limits of;

A turnover of £2 million or more in the previous year. Handle/own 50 tonnes or more of packaging in the previous year.

If a company meets both of the threshold limits it becomes obligated under the regulations to recycle and recover a percentage of the packaging tonnage handled. The company must also register with the Environment Agency either individually or through a compliance scheme.

Packaging recovery notes

Packaging Recovery Notes (PRNs) are certificates which must be obtained from accredited re-processors in order to discharge and therefore comply with the regulations.

For those companies unable to obtain PRNs from their backdoor waste WESpack expertise is able to assess the obligation and ascertain the required PRNs to discharge the obligation successfully.
