Circa. 120,000 tonnes of HDPE is used in the UK to make bottles for fresh milk each year. In reclaiming and reprocessing a percentage of this material our rHDPE has helped the dairy industry reduce CO2 emissions by more than an estimated 20,000 tonnes so far.
In partnership with industry and our customers
Many brand owners are actively seeking to ensure that their packaging is eventually seen as a resource. With this in mind Biffa Polymers, in conjunction with the UK dairy industry produced the world's first commercially available food grade rHDPE that could be directly used in the production of new milk bottles. Today, approximately 85% of the UK's fresh milk sold in HDPE bottles contains up to 15% of rHDPE.
Not just for dairy bottles
Biffa Polymers rHDPE is not only used in blow moulding dairy bottles, it is also used in the production of bottles for hair and beauty care products, extruded in cosmetic tubes and food trays and injected into toys and closures.
Rigorously analysed
Before our rHDPE is given a food grade approval, it passes through 3 different stages incorporating some 17 processes. From the input of the feedstock into our "ARF" line (advanced recycling facility), through the vacureema process employed in our foodgrade production hall through to our fully accredited laboratory (which is traceable to national standards), where the material is constantly tested in process and rigorously analysed to parts per billion before being certified as safe for food applications.
