Opened in early 2011, our mixed plastics facility is yet another world first for Biffa Polymers. Designed to recycle post consumer plastics, it is the first facility of its kind that makes polymer grades from rigid mixed plastics used in the production of pots, tubs and trays.
The new Biffa Polymers mixed plastics recycling facility, built with support from WRAP, on behalf of the government, is the first integrated washing and sorting facility in the UK that is specifically designed to recycle rigid mixed plastics packaging.
This facility began processing 15,000 tonnes per year from April 2011, and will be at full capacity by April 2012. It will process plastics from our own MRFs, as well as local authorities and commercial customers from England, Scotland, Wales and Ireland.
Once sorted and processed, the high quality outputs, sorted by polymer type and colour are suitable for a wide range of end uses where the environmental benefits are unlocked through replacing the use of virgin plastic. Examples of new products include blow moulded bottles, injection moulded caps, extruded sheets, paint trays, plant pots, storage boxes, pallets, automotive parts and office furniture.
