Biffa will build West Sussex’s new flagship facility at its Brookhurst Wood site, to the north of Horsham.
The site is a former clay pit, used to extract natural Wealden clay for the manufacture of bricks. Part of the site was also once used for brick-making, and a brick-making activities continue today on an adjacent site.
In modern times, Brookhurst Wood has helped to meet West Sussex’s waste management needs. Landfill operations began on the site in 1985 and Biffa has owned and managed the site for over twenty years.
Under the Contract with West Sussex County Council, West Sussex’s black bag household rubbish will continue to be taken to Brookhurst Wood. However, this rubbish will no longer be sent straight to landfill, instead Biffa will separate and treat this rubbish at its new Mechanical Biological Treatment facility.
Brookhurst Wood was identified by both West Sussex County Council and Horsham District Council as suitable for the development of new waste management facilities.
Biffa applied for planning permission to build a new Mechanical Biological Treatment facility at Brookhurst Wood in summer 2009. West Sussex County Council granted planning permission for the facility in April 2010.
Biffa began work on West Sussex’s new facility in the summer of 2010. You can find out the latest information about works on site here
