Recent Operations.

2008

In August 2008 we completed the engineering of Cells 5 and 4B in the central part of Westmill II and in September of the same year completed the restoration of the Cell 1 and part of Cell 2; an area of circa 26,000m2, in the south of the site and nearest to the A10. A plan showing the layout of Westmill II is below.

Final restoration of Cell 1 and part of Cell 2 involved covering the existing layers of soil with a LLDPE (linear low density polyethylene) sheet. This is a very strong but flexible “plastic” layer that is placed in a series of panels which are then welded to form a continuous sheet. The sheet prevents the ingress of rainwater and the release of landfill gas. Above the sheet is placed a 1 metre thick layer of soils which are then seeded with grass.

2009

Over 35,000m2 of landfill capping and restoration was completed in 2009, extending the area of Westmill II restored to 6.1 hectares.

During early December we installed 22 landfill gas wells and the associated landfill gas collection pipework connected to the main collection system and power generation plant. The site generates 2.5MW of electricity which is exported to the grid.

The drilling of the wells is an essential part of the landfill environmental control systems. The wells have to be drilled from the surface of the landfill and measures are taken to reduce as far as is possible the escape of landfill gas during this operation.

2010

In June 2010 we completed the engineering of Cell 6 and  7 South and commenced infilling in August. During the summer 2010 we also completed the capping across part of Cell 5 extending the permanent capped area for another 12,000m2.

2011 and future site works

During 2011 we will continue infilling Cell 6 and 7 South. It is planned that these cells will be operational until November 2011 subject to waste inputs. We plan to start the engineering works in Cell 6 North during June . The completion of the engineering works will take approximately 5 months and once built Cell 6 North will create another 250,000m3 of void which will last until mid 2012.
