How to manage your Christmas waste…

Biffa’s recycling team shares their advice on how to rise to the challenge of managing your waste, at the busiest trading time of the year!

How can I prevent waste becoming a problem over the holidays?

Planning ahead is key. Bring your schedules forward if your business is going to be closed during the festive period. That way potentially odorous waste won’t be sitting around in your bins.

Be sure to let Biffa know too so that we can cancel any unnecessary collections during that time.

How can we keep up with our increased waste management needs during the festive season?

If Christmas is the busiest time of year for your business, be sure to book any additional collections or extra services you might need. And, as many other customers will be doing the same thing, the more advance notice you can give us, the better.

How can we help ensure our waste is collected?

With everyone out and about shopping and preparing to celebrate, there can be a lot more traffic around your premises so make sure your bins are available for collection and accessible to us.

Remember that our drivers need to be able to park and get to the bins in order to collect the waste.

How should we dispose of seasonal items like the Christmas decorations?

Once the fun is over, remember not to put foil wrapping paper or tinsel in the Dry Mixed Recycling (DMR) bin. It’s not recyclable and belongs in the general waste. It’s a good idea to keep a close eye on what’s going in the DMR bins to maintain quality control and avoid contamination.

Contaminated waste will be rejected and will then be charged as general waste.

So what can we do with that once-a-year-waste?

This is the season to recycle more. A number of charities operate Christmas tree recycling schemes so there’s sure to be a good cause in your local area wanting to collect your tree.

Think about having a glass bin for those office party empties; perhaps arrange an ad-hoc food recycling service too, and be sure to dispose of any Waste Electrical & Electronic Equipment (WEEE) correctly.

Have a great Christmas and remember to #Recycle!
