Lateral Flow Device (LFD) Waste Collection and Disposal

Nationwide Lateral Flow Device (LFD) and Covid Testing Kit Waste Disposal

If you operate a site that is currently mass testing for coronavirus, no matter the size of the facility, Biffa's LFD (Lateral Flow Devices) waste disposal service will ensure your waste is fully compliant with new regulations whilst keeping your staff, students and the public safe.

With total UK coverage, Biffa’s national waste management network offers comprehensive support and compliance. We provide businesses, universities, schools and councils with the necessary services to dispose of Antigen Lateral Device Flow Test Kits safely and legally. At Biffa, our LFD disposal processes have been designed to be compliant and secure, ensuring that waste is disposed of correctly and responsibility.

Why is it important to dispose of LFDs safely?

UK Government Health & Social Care bodies have recently released new guidance on waste produced by sites operating ongoing COVID-19 tests. The guidance makes clear that LFD (Lateral Flow Devices) are a type of non-hazardous healthcare waste.

LFD (Lateral Flow Devices) now sit under non-hazardous EWC Codes. PPE is classified as 18 01 04, whilst Swabs and Cartridges/Devices are classified under 18 01 07 (except in Scotland where both may also be 20 01 99). This means to be legally compliant you must segregate this waste from all other waste produced at your site or facility.

Supporting this, the Environment Agency has authorised disposal of swabs, PPE and LFD cartridges at a number of specified municipal waste-to-energy incinerators under a special Regulatory Position Statement, in addition to existing clinical waste incinerators which normally dispose of healthcare waste.

If you operate a mass testing site which offers ongoing tests, LFD waste should be segregated in accordance with the relevant guidance. Biffa can support you by providing practical advice from day one, then removing and safely disposing of your waste as you need it.

How mass lateral flow test disposal works?

There is a four step process to disposing of your lateral flow device or medical waste:

  1. Containers, signage and correctly coloured bags are delivered to your site for you to fill with bagged waste
  2. Waste is removed from bin and securely transported in compliant vehicles
  3. Waste is then safely taken to one of Biffa’s authorised Transfer Stations where it is collected together in sealed containers
  4. This waste is the sent to an authorised disposal site for direct incineration
