In an industry that is traditionally all about the numbers, Buzz Bingo pride themselves on being different. It’s about more than just beating the odds – it’s about people and relationships as well. It’s thanks to this friendly, family ethos that they are able invite around 1.2 million visitors to their 126 clubs each month.

It’s no surprise that a business that puts community at its core is also focused on their environmental and social responsibility; making sure they are doing all they can when it comes to waste.

When Biffa started their contract with Gala Bingo (now Buzz Bingo) back in October 2016, Procurement Manager Dan Hetherington had clear cost and environmental targets he wanted to achieve, and Biffa was confident that it could improve recycling rates and save the business money.

Thanks to detailed knowledge of the industry and a commitment to achieving the best for our customers, Biffa was able to do that – and more.

Drawing on experience

Biffa's Sector Head Carl Fletcher is passionate about the clients he works with and about achieving great results for them. This, combined with a knowledge and understanding of the waste industry and leisure sector, put Biffa in a great position to advise and support Buzz Bingo.

“One of the big advantages of working with Biffa is having sector specific insight,” Carl explained. “By understanding the industry and the challenges our customers face, we are able to apply what we learn and make improvements for our customers.”

To support the Bingo account, the team was preparing to undertake an audit across all 126 nationwide clubs – all within the first two months of the contract.

“It’s important that we keep our promises to our customers and deliver on these,” said Carl. “It was no easy task to complete all the audits within such a tight timeframe, but it enabled us to tailor the services to the clubs’ exact requirements.”

It’s this level of service and commitment that has helped create a relationship where Dan is happy to say that he “trusts Biffa 100%”.

“Biffa did an excellent job when it came to the audits," he continued. "They went back to basics and conducted an audit of all sites – reducing collections where they weren’t required and adding in services when the need was there.”

A good call

Following the audits, Biffa was able to put the best services in place, which included changing the types of collections from general waste and cardboard to general, DMR and Glass – helping to improve their environmental credentials and bring financial benefits at the same time.

There are now around 437 on-site containers across the 126 clubs, with approximately 2,960 services every month – although as Carl explained, “these can be adjusted in line with business requirements”.

Just six months into the two-year contract and Biffa had already helped save Buzz Bingo £120,000. Not only that, but landfill diversion rates increased to nearly 97%.

But the benefits of working with Biffa didn’t stop there. Biffa and the team supported Dan with implementing the changes through education and training initiatives – from on-site advice to producing a tailored recycling guide, complete with posters to help inform employees.

External waste is now in a much better place, so Biffa is supporting Buzz Bingo with a new trial across ten sites that will tackle internal waste, and further improve recycling rates.

“Biffa has been responsible for driving many of the new initiatives, including the implementation of a Waste Champion across each club,” said Dan. “So as well as making people aware of the changes, it’s about supporting them with these new habits.”

The trial clubs have been chosen specifically so that Biffa can make regular visits and provide assistance during these early stages. “It’s important to make sure the service is refined before rolling it out across the rest of the UK, and that we get it right for Buzz,” explained Carl.

Once implemented across all clubs, Carl estimates an improvement in recycling levels of 27.5%, with the Buzz recycling targets being met at 60%.

A winning partnership

Communication is key to any successful relationship, so as well as a more formal quarterly meeting between Biffa and Gala to talk through the services, almost daily catch-up calls from the Biffa team ensure that conversation continues to flow and any issues are picked up and dealt with swiftly.

“We’ve certainly achieved what we initially set out to do, and more,” said Dan. “Although there are still areas that we’d like to build on in the future, including looking into improved food waste recycling. It’s reassuring to know that Biffa will be able to advise us and guide us through any future changes when we undertake them.”
