Shredded Plastics

Biffa joins pioneering Poseidon Project to recycle previously non-recyclable plastic

Case study / Bringing an end to single use plastics

The Challenge - How can we make the non-recyclable plastic, recyclable?

At least 64% of all plastic packaging placed on the market is now recyclable. It’s our mission to find recycling solutions for the 36% of plastics that cannot be or are hard to recycle.

The Breakthrough

We’re collaborating with leading experts in the Poseidon Project and Alpek Polyester, a cross-industry initiative aiming to create a process to chemically recycle harder grades of PET (polyethylene terephthalate) material. In other words, to recycle materials that were considered non-recyclable. Our role will be to separate the difficult to recycle PET plastics, such as PET Jazz and trays, using our pioneering 15,000 tonne plant. This will lead to increasing the UK’s overall recycling capacity.

The Impact

The residual materials that can’t currently be recycled will be processed by Poseidon, where it will be transformed into a virgin-like PET, before Alpek then transform it into polyester bottle resin. This means it can be used time and time again - making the non-recyclable, recyclable.
