Our Sustainability Strategy

In March 2020 we launched our Sustainability Strategy, Resourceful, Responsible

sustainable development goals chart

The strategy builds on Biffa’s skills and expertise within the waste management sector and focuses on delivering a more sustainable future for the UK, recognising the role we can play in helping solve the country’s waste challenge.

Resourceful, Responsible looks ahead to 2030 and is built around three key pillars:

  1. Building a circular economy

We aim to unlock £1.25bn of investment in the UK’s green economy infrastructure by 2030 and enable customers to fully implement the waste hierarchy by:

    • Quadrupling our plastic recycling capability
    • Collecting 50% more business waste for recycling
    • Reducing our dependence on landfill
    • Investing in two Energy from Waste plants
    • Ensuring all plastic waste processed by Biffa is recycled in the UK

  2. Tackling climate change

We aim to reduce carbon dioxide emissions by a further 50% by 2030 by:

    • Reducing our reliance on fossil fuels through a gradual transition to using electric Refuse Collection Vehicles, ceasing purchase of fossil fuelled trucks by 2030 and using none by 2040
    • Installing solar farms on closed and restored landfill sites, generating 100MW of renewable energy capacity
    • Increasing our collection route efficiency by 20%
    • Increasing usage of trains to transport non-recyclable waste materials
    • Capturing methane emissions and converting to electricity to export to the grid

  3. Caring for our people, supporting our communities

We aim to be a fair and decent employer and a good corporate citizen, supporting good causes by:

    • Reducing Lost Time Injury Rate by 50% by 2030, through our Safer Together campaign
    • Delivering £25 million to local community and UK partnership scheme projects
    • Improving biodiversity levels across 30% of Biffa’s landfill estates
    • Improving diversity and inclusion
    • Demonstrating industry-leadership in anti-slavery practices.
