The 250kWp Solar PV (photovoltaics) array will provide Edmonton with an estimated 225,000 kilowatts of electricity, saving around 120 tonnes of CO2 annually.

The 180,000 square foot MRF is Biffa’s key waste recycling plant in London and one of the capital’s largest, processing more than 70% of the North London’s comingled recyclates. The state-of-the art Edmonton facility is licensed to process up to 350,000 tonnes of recyclables annually.

Biffa’s head of property, Nick Barsby, commented “As one of the UK’s leading recycling services providers, we are constantly reviewing our own procedures and facilities in an effort to become more energy efficient.

“The installation of Solar PV at one of our largest MRFs will enable us to make significant savings on carbon emissions while processing recyclables and is a great step forward for the business.”

The installation was managed by Syzygy, the UK’s leading renewables energy consultancy, on behalf of the site landlord, Aberdeen Asset Management, as part of its strategy to work closely with occupiers to reduce their carbon output and improve efficiency ahead of anticipated future energy legislation.

Dan Grandage, Head of Responsible Property Investment at Aberdeen Asset Management, comments: “This is a really important initiative and reflects the importance Aberdeen attaches to responsible investing.”

Biffa’s Edmonton facility recently won a five year contract to provide single stream household dry mixed recycling and organic waste services to the borough of Enfield.
