Biffa keeps up momentum of Company Shop acquisition with new store opening

Biffa is delighted to announce the opening of the 13th Company Shop store today. Company Shop officially opened its doors in Dudley today at 10am, meaning thousands of members can now benefit from high-quality, low-cost food and products – helping to stretch family budgets.

It follows Biffa’s acquisition of Company Shop Group (CSG), the UK’s leading and largest redistributor of surplus food and household products in February 2021. The two companies are working together to deliver a unique circular economy proposition to the food manufacturing and FMCG sectors and help some the UK’s biggest operators to unlock sustainable value from the significant amounts of quality surplus food and beverage waste that is produced in the UK each year.

Biffa CEO Michael Topham said:

“I’m delighted that the Dudley store is open and providing members with high quality, low-cost food and products. We are proud owners of Company Shop Group  and committed to keeping up the momentum of growth for the group while putting surplus to work and making a meaningful contribution to society. We look forward to welcoming many more members to the Dudley store ”

Sally Wake, Head of Strategic Relationships for Company Shop Group said:

“We are so excited to have opened the doors of Company Shop Dudley, and we are pleased to be able to support the region at this crucial time through our offer of high-quality, low-cost products that also help to prevent waste. We’re so grateful for the support we have received along the way to make this possible, from our industry partners, members, local organisations, Dudley Council and the wider community, and in particular from Mr Longhi and Mr Mayor, who joined us to mark this momentous occasion.  For anyone who is eligible but has not signed up for membership yet, we want to encourage them to do so right away, so that they too can benefit from our amazing offers.”

About Company shop

Based in Barnsley, South Yorkshire, Company Shop Group is the UK’s leading and largest redistributor of surplus food and household products. Through a business model which puts environmental and social purpose at its heart, CSG prevents waste by identifying surplus products and then collecting, processing and redistributing it for sale through its unique network of membership-based outlets, whilst ensuring compliance with stringent food safety standards. Surplus products include production overruns, trial products, or produce that has been incorrectly labelled or packaged, which without intervention would be destined to become waste.

The membership base of Company Shop stores comprises employees working in the FMCG supply chain, the emergency services, NHS and the armed forces.

The Group also operates an award-winning social enterprise, Community Shop, a not-for-profit community interest company with a network of six community hubs supporting some of the most deprived areas of UK. Supported by donations from supplier partners, Community Shop provides its members with vital access to deeply discounted food, as well as life-changing learning and development programmes.

The acquisition will see CSG join Biffa as part of the latest in a series of investments which have seen Biffa leverage its leading position in sustainable waste management to unlock circular economy innovation and expand its capability to support its customers’ waste reduction and recycling targets.

CSG will work alongside Biffa’s existing Specialist Services teams, through which Biffa already provides bespoke solutions to customers in the food manufacturing and e-commerce sectors, adding redistribution of surplus produce to Biffa’s leading offering in waste management and recycling and providing a platform for CSG’s long-term expansion and growth.

About Company Shop Dudley

Company Shop Dudley is located at Castle Mill on Birmingham New Road (DY1 4DA), and the shelves are stacked with food and products from big-name brands such as Marks and Spencer, Nestlé and Tesco, which are on typically around 50% off the normal retail price.

The store prevents good food and household products from going to waste and has created 47 new jobs in the area, tackling the challenge of food and product waste whilst supporting families and the local economy.

Membership is open to almost all key workers, including those working in the NHS, social care, emergency services, FMCG supply chain, British Army and prison services, and temporarily to those working in schools and councils, amongst others. Anyone who is eligible for membership can sign up for a free membership card online, with applications open on an ongoing basis.

Company Shop Dudley has also extended its membership to those in receipt of means tested benefits, including families with children receiving Free School Meals (FSM). This is in order to reach those most in need across the region, during a time when it’s most critical to do so.

For local manufacturers, retailers and brands who are looking to do something positive with their surplus products, Company Shop is encouraging them to get in touch to see how the store can help them.
