Waverley Borough Council has awarded its new waste collection contract for residents’ refuse and recycling bins to waste and recycling company, Biffa.

Following a full tender process, the contract, which also includes street cleaning, has been awarded to Biffa, one of the UK’s leading national recycling and waste management providers.

The eight-year contract, which has an option to extend for a further two terms, will offer residents the same high level of service they currently receive. Commencing from 1 November 2019, the council and Biffa will work closely with current provider, Veolia to ensure a smooth transition.

Councillor Andrew Bolton, Portfolio Holder for Environment at Waverley Borough Council, said: “Procuring efficient, effective and economic waste, recycling and street cleaning services is a high priority for the council. The contract, which is worth £4.7 million a year and comparable to what we are currently paying, is the single largest council contract awarded and we are delighted that we can work with Biffa, which is a highly regarded and established waste company. “Biffa has extensive experience of delivering waste services for neighbouring authorities and I know will offer an excellent service to our residents. I’d also like to thank Veolia for providing an excellent service of a very high standard to Waverley’s residents for the past 14 years.”

Bin collections will still take place on the same frequency; once Biffa has taken over they will be reviewing collection rounds and may make collection day changes, however, residents will be notified of any such changes in advance.

Biffa will be implementing a brand new fleet of vehicles in the borough to deliver enhanced kerbside collection services and residents will also benefit from the introduction of textile and small waste electrical and electronic equipment kerbside recycling collections. These will be in addition to the existing refuse, recycling, food, clinical and green waste collections which already operate within the area.
Roger Edwards, Managing Director at Biffa’s municipal division, said: “We’re delighted to have been awarded the contract for waste collection and street cleansing for Waverley Borough Council. We’ll be ensuring our fleet provide a seamless takeover from the current waste collection provider, while delivering cost-effective services”.

Biffa will also be using technology as part of the service, including cameras on all vehicles to make work on the highways safer and as evidence for cleansing inspections. Data collected from on-board technology and cameras will be analysed to improve cleansing standards and target hotspot locations.

In addition, Biffa will be supporting the Safer Waverley Partnership and working towards a plastic free status at the Bourne Mill depot.
