Recycling Collections

Dry Mixed Recycling (DMR) collections are changing

We’ve rebranded simply as ‘Recycling’. Improving Recycling levels in business waste is important to Biffa, as it is to you and your customers. We want to work with you to build an environmentally friendly service.

What can go in the Recycling bin?

Please ensure that only the following clean and dry items are put in your Recycling bin and that all your employees are aware of this:

  • ICON

    Cardboard

  • ICON

    Paper

  • ICON

    Food tins & drink cans

  • ICON

Plastic bottles, pots, tubs and trays

All other items must be placed in your General Waste bin. Both food and glass waste should be collected separately.

Please ensure only clear bags are used in this container; black bags are not accepted in our Recycling as drivers are unable to tell if the waste items in them will contaminate the lorry.

Why are we doing this?

1. To help increase the UK’s recycling levels and to send less to landfill sites

The environmental impact of your business is important. Contaminating your waste with other materials reduces our ability to recycle it effectively. By getting more of the right waste in the right bins we can send more material overall to recycling facilities. This means more waste can be recycled into new products and re-used, reducing your businesses environmental impact.

2. To protect your business

This is re-enforced by the government’s 25 year environmental plan which was laid out in December 2018 and is expected to be introduced following consultation in 2023. This plan includes ensuring a consistent set of recyclable materials is collected from homes and businesses. We need to act now to simply recycle what can be recycled efficiently. For further reading on the incoming legislation please see the links on the right hand side of this page.

3. Recycling containers are currently more than 30% contaminated

We have been conducting field trials which show that individual recycling containers frequently contain more than 30% contaminants. This then contaminates good quality recyclables which means they cannot be turned into recycled products. We need your help to improve the quality of recycling.

Please click here for further reading and more information around the analysis Biffa has done on recycling.

What do you do with my recycling?

The Recycling you place into your container is taken to specialist plants where it is separated and then sent on for further treatment. Even your General Waste is sorted before largely being sent to be converted into Refuse Derived Fuel to divert as much waste as possible from landfill. Click here to see videos of our treatment plants and find out more about what happens to your waste once it’s been collected.

How can Biffa help me?

We have provided you with a poster that you can use as a reminder about what can be put in the Recycling bin. Posters which should be displayed above your internal bins can be downloaded here or in the download panel on this page. If you have specific issues then we would be pleased to schedule a call or a visit with one of our local representatives, our aim is simply to improve the quality of recycling containers rather than to disrupt any part of our service to you.

What about plastic film?

As clear bags are produced from LDPE film, and in response to customer feedback, we can accept LDPE film (clean pallet wrap and shrink wrap) into our Recycling containers, no other film is accepted. All other items must be placed in your General Waste bin. Please contact services@biffa.co.uk if you wish to set up single stream food or glass services.

I have a hanger on my bin, what do I do?

Our driver has identified materials in your DMR bin that cannot be recycled and from the 1st May we will not be able to collect them as Recycling. The hanger has been left to show what we can accept for recycling and this now gives you the opportunity to decide what to do next.

You could do nothing and until the 30th April we will collect as normal but from 1st May we will not be able to empty your bin, instead you will be notified that it is not suitable for recycling and it will be collected on the next general waste service in your area. There may well be additional charges for this.

You could decide that cleaning the waste up so it only contains those items on the bin hanger is just not possible, in which case let us know and we will convert this to a general waste service.

But what we really want you to do is use the DMR container for the clean recyclable items on the bin hanger. This will ensure we can recycle the maximum amount of material, you won’t receive any additional charges for wasted journey’s and we don’t have to send extra trucks out to collect unsuitable or contaminated material – this really is the best option for everyone and our planet.

Because we are changing the service and what can be allowed in the DMR bin our driver emptied the container as normal as it’s only fair to give you the opportunity to decide what to do next. We will continue to empty the container, contaminated or not, until 30th April. From 1st May, any items unsuitable or other contamination, will mean the bin cannot be emptied.
