Engineering Work Experience Opportunity for Armed Forces Leavers - October 2025

Applications for our three-day work experience programme from 21-23 October 2025 at our Aldridge facility in the midlands are now open. 

If you are leaving the armed forces within the next 18 months and considering your next career move, apply for Biffa’s three-day work experience programme. You’ll have the opportunity to work within an existing engineering team and get hands on experience. 

You will find out what it’s like to work in civilian engineering and it will help prepare you for a successful career transition into the private sector. It will also help you decide whether you think a career at Biffa as a Technician, Supervisor or Maintenance Manager could be right for you.

One week work experience opportunity - what's involved?

You, and a small group of armed forces leavers, will gain hands on experience for one week within an operational Biffa facility in the midlands. You will be fully supported by Biffa’s engineering team and will get to experience the following:

Electrical and Mechanical Engineering
working on diverse engineering tasks in both electrical and mechanical fields

Mobile and Shift Experience
experiencing working patterns within civilian engineering
Team management
experiencing this in a civilian setting
Circular economy and Biffa’s role
finding out more about how Biffa is solving environmental challenges
Financial Experience
understanding the financial aspects of engineering projects as well as budgets
Interview and CV Support
helping you to hone your interview skills and ensuring your CV is as effective as possible

I left the 1st Royal Tank Regiment in 2013 having completed an engineering apprenticeship. While I initially found the transition from military to civilian life difficult, I settled well into an engineering role at Biffa. I now support three facilities and although the role is fast-paced I feel supported by both managers and colleagues, many of whom have military experience themselves.
