Packaging Surgery

Welcome to the Packaging Surgery. The doctor will see you now.

Packaging for businesses though necessary, can be confusing when it comes to recyclability and how to reduce excess waste. We’ve opened the Packaging Surgery to help our customers tackle these common recycling issues and address the problems at the source.

What we provide our packaging patients

As pioneers of the UK’s first fully closed-loop recycling model, we have a team of experts with knowledge of recycling operations across the country, offering data analysis, insight, and simpler sustainable alternatives to ensure that packaging is widely recyclable. Packaging Clinic

Procedures at the Packaging Surgery:

When we open our virtual surgery doors to assess the packaging from a client's perspective, the following key areas of priority become much clearer:

1. Education – Prevention is better than cure. Changing the way customers think about waste and how they could better dispose of packaging by promoting clear labelling and well-designed deposit return schemes in a crowded market where consumers are asked to return empty bottles for reuse or recycling.
2. Material substitutions – The antidote to anxiety. Ensuring recyclable alternatives to plastic packaging are commercially and environmentally viable and fit for purpose.
3. Bioplastics – Inoculating our clients from all the greenwash. Identifying which compostable, biodegradable, and biobased materials should or shouldn’t be used to facilitate their most sustainable route for disposal.
4. Front of store systems and support – A jab in the arm for sustainable packaging. Analysing where customers’ waste material could be recycled and making sure customers know of any new infrastructure or technology which could reduce packaging waste.
5. Back of store and distribution – Recycling that transforms into a healthy circular economy. Helping customers identify how they can reduce transit or secondary packaging, looking at returnable, refillable or reusable formats.

Customers we’ve already helped

British bakery chain Greggs is one of the first clients to sign up to the Packaging Surgery, using Biffa’s expertise to start an in-depth assessment of their biggest challenges and help its packaging ambitions develop.

Paul Rhodes from Greggs said:  “Packaging is a key part of our sustainability ambition, so it is extremely useful to work alongside Biffa on their ‘packaging surgery’ concept. We’ve already identified opportunities and options for further development by combining our internal knowledge and the recycling infrastructure experience of the Biffa team, and we see this developing into a key part of our innovation approach in the future”
