Food waste collection services from Biffa

Food Collections

In recent years, much attention and investment has been focused on persuading Britons to cut the millions of tonnes of food waste produced by households, and to recycle far more of what is wasted.

With food waste now regarded as a valuable energy resource, many local authorities are deploying food waste collections to capture this waste stream traditionally consigned to the refuse bin.

Food waste collections make a meaningful contribution to local recycling performance, lifting rates by as much as 20%. They also help protect the environment by diverting food waste from disposal by landfill or incineration towards conversion into green energy.

Biffa has significant experience of designing, implementing and managing household waste food collection services, most commonly scheduled on a weekly basis.

Purpose-built vehicles, coupled with computerised route planning, provide householders with regular, reliable and convenient weekly collections of food waste captured in caddies.

Biffa collects thousands of tonnes of waste food each month for processing at anaerobic digestion (AD) facilities. These are operated either by Biffa or by specialist energy-from-waste partners, and convert food waste into natural biogas that generates electricity.
