Anaerobic Digestion (AD) technology is increasingly deployed across the UK, converting waste food matter into biomethane gas. The gas is used to generate renewable energy, which is then exported to the National Grid.

Biffa is the second largest generator of electricity from landfill gas in the UK, operating over 90MW of generation capacity at 34 operational sites throughout the UK.
We offer a waste glass recycling collection service that processes the material into new, single-colour glass or recycles it as aggregate. We recycle around 90,000 tonnes of glass per annum at our state-of-the-art facilities.
Biffa’s In-Vessel Composting facilities convert garden waste into compost and soil conditioners that are used to restore landfill sites. Garden waste is diverted from landfill, which naturally benefits the environment and can help lift local recycling rates.
Biffa aims to divert waste from landfill wherever possible, however substantial volumes of residual waste that is not recyclable or suitable for fuel use will remain. This type of waste must be safely disposed of at landfill. Biffa is one of the leading operators of landfill services in the UK - in the last year alone, we handled around 3.1 million tonnes of waste through our 11 remaining operational landfill sites.
Our cutting edge Mechanical & Biological Treatment plant can process over 310,000 tonnes of waste per year. The facility includes the mechanical recovery of both recyclable material and residual waste for refuse-derived fuel, with any biodegradable material treated within the AD plant to generate electricity.
Biffa Polymers constructed the world’s first commercially available rHDPE food grade production plant in 2008. The facility is designed to process 50,000 tonnes of material per year. This cutting-edge process creates rHDPE from recycled milk bottles.Find out more about Plastic Recycling
The UK uses billions of metal products every year, including aerosols, aluminium cans and materials for the construction industry. Good news - metal is 100% recyclable.
We currently have two Material Recycling Facilities (MRFs) located in the UK, which together processes around 400,000 tonnes of dry mixed recyclable waste every year.
Biffa is one of the UK’s largest producers of RDF, delivering more than 2,000 tonnes of RDF to energy recovery facilities every day. RDF exports have enabled UK waste producers to divert their residual waste from landfill and convert it into energy at European plants.
