How To Get Your Garden or Outdoor Space Ready For Summer

Summer is officially here, which means more of us are wanting to spend our lunch breaks and weekends outside, enjoying the sun before the rain arrives. With the Summer break right around the corner, now is the perfect time to plan and overhaul any green space, either at work or at home.

Just remember to dispose of any garden or business waste ecologically!

Getting the garden ready for use at work

You may have been using the small courtyard at work to store bins, bikes, packaging or general junk out of the office during the cold weather. Now people are starting to want to use the space outside to enjoy on their lunch breaks so it’s time to get clearing!

Getting at least 10-15 minutes of sunlight every day is good for your health but don’t forget your sunscreen even if it’s just for a quarter of an hour!

What needs to be here?

If there are items that don’t belong in the garden but need to be kept, such as employee bikes or rubbish bins, consider storing them in a different, unused area like a side entrance. If there is no other place, add a bike rack to keep bikes tidy and hide any commercial recycling bins behind shrub boxes.

Clear down the decks

Next sweep down any patio areas and bag up any leaves, twigs or debris into strong bags to prevent tearing. For grassy areas, use a lawn rake to easily drag any loose leaves into a neat pile for easy collection. You should now be able to see the ground and it already seems more inviting!

Don’t forget to use any protective wear such as gloves to protect your hands.

Make any little repairs

Once all the garden waste has been collected, start making any repairs. For example, are there any furniture that needs replacing or a broken fence?

Having a place to sit and enjoy lunch is important so if any garden furniture is damaged or broken, it’s a good idea to get rid of it and replace it, not only for health and safety reasons but to improve the mood of your staff.

Dispose of rubbish easily and responsibly

Remember garden waste can't be disposed of in your business recycling collection or general business waste disposal. However, Biffa OneCall can collect a range of unwanted items from your office including garden waste, broken furniture and electrical items. Everything can be collected within an hour or less, depending on van load and you can be assured that your waste will be disposed of ecologically.

Getting your garden ready for fun at home.

If you’ve cleared out your office’s garden for you and your colleagues to enjoy at work, why stop there? Get your garden at home looking ship shape in time for summer and enjoy a long, warm summer’s evening in the garden.

Garden’s at home are usually larger than what is available at work so you might need to bring in reinforcements. Kids love getting involved with new projects and it’s good for them to be outdoors enjoying the sunny weather this half term but don’t forget the sun protection including hats, sunglasses, sunscreen as well as garden protection like gloves to protect hands from sharp thorns.

Be careful of any hiding hedgehogs!

If it’s been a few months since the garden had a mow, you may be tempted to start there but it’s important to first make a sweep of any grassy areas to ensure there are no large rocks, a piece of metal or wildlife that could get caught up in the lawnmower.

Cut the wild, wild lawn

Once the grass has been cleared of any debris such as branches, leaves and wood it’s time to start clearing the overgrowth. Most lawn mowers have a bag attached to collect grass cuttings but once the bag is full, those cuttings need to be placed in a green waste bin. Don’t worry if you don’t have a green waste bin – Biffa OneCall can collect any unwanted garden waste from grass cuttings to old furniture, broken BBQs, wood and metal offcuts.

The garden should now look a lot tamer and manageable and the children may even be off playing in the newly cut grass but there’s still work to be done. Now’s the time to make any garden repairs – does the fence or garden shed need to be treated or repainted?

Make a home for all the wildlife

Another super fun project which children love getting involved with is making sure that wildlife is taken care of this summer. Building bee homes, bird boxes and hedgehog hiding places encourages little animals and insects to make your garden their homes while they pollinate your flowers and make your garden a relaxing haven. Planting wildflowers, vegetables and berry bushes is a fun and colourful way to brighten up your outdoor space that both you and the little creatures will enjoy.

At Biffa, we love making the outdoors even more beautiful which is why we invest millions into community and outdoor projects as part of our Biffa Award.
