In 2019 we launched a brand-new company wide project to help assist the dwindling bee population. Since then there has been a real buzzz from depots across the country wanting to get involved with Biffa Bees In 2020 we saw Biffa Bee’N’Bees popping up across the country, and now we have our very first Dark European Honey Bees colony.

With a large landscape available at Seaham, it was an ideal location for two beehives. There is a “strong combination of open areas…whilst offering a great variety of forest and floral areas which will mutually benefit from the presence of the bees”, said Martyn Robinson, Mechanical Project Engineer/Beekeeper.

“The hives we are introducing are naturally occurring in the wild, so require very little extra from us as keepers. They will have a fresh supply of water and a frost cover in winter to help preserve the strength of the hive.”

Though Martyn has no plans to launch Biffa’s honey range, he does want to start offering short educational meetings during staff breaks to allow anyone at Seaham to see and learn about the bees.
