Reverse Vending Machines touch down at Glasgow Airport

Female staff depositing a plastic bottle into reverse vending machine at Glasgow airport

Glasgow Airport in partnership with Biffa has installed two Reverse Vending Machines as part of a pilot project to encourage passengers and staff to recycle more of their cans and bottles.

It is hoped that the installation of the Reverse Vending Machines will help to boost recycling by passengers and staff within the airport by providing a dedicated return point for cans and bottles.

The machines, which can each accept 320 plastic bottles and 650 cans, have been brought in on a trial basis to coincide with the COP26 summit on climate change and ahead of the introduction of the Scottish Deposit Return Scheme.

Glasgow Airport has agreed to donate 5p for each bottle or can deposited in the machines during the four-week trial to an environmentally-themed charity or project.

By creating a deposit return scheme, UK Governments want to increase the recycling rate of drinks containers and reduce littering. Introducing such a scheme will help change consumer behaviour to encourage higher levels of drinks container recycling.

Scotland will be the first to go live with a Deposit Return Scheme due to be implemented in 2023 with England, Northern Ireland and Wales awaiting feedback from recent consultations at present with a view that the scheme will go live in 2024.
