Biffa Asbestos

Case Study // Peace of mind from Biffa Asbestos

Use of asbestos-containing building materials (ACMs) peaked in the 1960s and 1970s before the health risks became fully understood and asbestos bans came into force in the 1980s and 1990s. Despite the clampdown, a large amount remains in UK buildings: from commercial and industrial developments to schools, hospitals and even homes.

But while discovery of asbestos during construction, maintenance and demolition projects is still a common occurrence that can be problematic for any organisation, Biffa Asbestos offers years of expertise in its effective, highly specialised removal.

Biffa depots and dedicated ADR driver teams in the north have more than two decades of experience of mobilising quickly and at short notice, having worked with many major asbestos removal companies there.

And now a successful partnership with the UK’s leading specialist asbestos removal company, Rhodar, has led to the expansion of Biffa’s service to a new nationwide disposal network with 12 dedicated regional hubs, strategically located containers and an expansion of specially trained ASR drivers – enabling us to offer you comprehensive national coverage and local expertise.

How Biffa Asbestos works

Available to all customers, Biffa Asbestos draws on the skills of more than 85 highly-trained, specialist drivers. Calls to the dedicated hotline number 0808 168 1111 or emails to, go through to the contact centre’s Asbestos team, which passes the order on to the relevant regional team.

Working with the customer, the team will establish precisely what’s required and allocate the correct resources, dispatch special sealed containers to the location, and arrange for them to be removed by Biffa’s specialist drivers. The bespoke units are then taken for secure disposal at one of Biffa’s licensed Asbestos sites.

From order to disposal, the entire process can be tracked and managed online, using Biffa’s innovative CustomerZone portal.

Nationwide expansion

Paul Casey, Regional General Manager, North East and Humberside, explains: “For the past year, Biffa has worked closely with Rhodar in the North East & Humberside Region, supporting the company with the safe haulage and disposal of asbestos.

“Rhodar’s trust in Biffa was built through access to hundreds of branded, well-maintained, safe, sealable, containers, consistent specialist teams and ADR drivers with years of experience, as well as our service levels, ease of contact, communication and our ability to maintain tight timelines.

“The trial proved so successful that Rhodar entrusted us to expand the partnership to depots across the UK so we set up our regional centres to mirror Rhodar’s own facilities – which uniquely allowed the service to be undertaken in all parts of the UK using Biffa’s vehicles. We’ve built even further on our already considerable experience with asbestos, and are also able to offer Rhodar’s expertise to our clients should the need arise.”

“Our expert teams are now able to handle any asbestos disposal issue nationwide, so customers can rest assured that we can resolve their problem with this safe, rapid-response service and excellent standards of customer care,” said Paul.
