Biffa wins Birmingham Wholesale Market contract

Birmingham Wholesale Market, the largest integrated market of its kind in the UK, has appointed Biffa’s latest acquisition, Weir Waste, to manage waste across its new £50m site.

Weir Waste, which was acquired by Biffa in a £16.2m deal in August 2018, was appointed by the market to support waste management at its new 360,400 sq ft site in The Hub industrial park. The contract is worth £2.5 million over five years and was awarded following a competitive tender process, with the firm’s commitment to education and improving recycling rates a key factor in its win.

The contract will see Biffa work with the 55 vendors on site to manage and monitor waste, using chipped bins to deliver an individual pay-by-weight solution which encourages users to recycle as much as possible.

As part of the on-boarding process, the firm has delivered individual training to each vendor to educate on reducing waste volume, with Biffa aiming to recycle 85 per cent of the new market’s waste. A dedicated on-site team will also be on hand to support six days a week to ensure waste management remains front of mind, led by key account manager Alex Kendrick and on-site supervisor Steve Hughes.

Alex Kendrick, key account manager at Biffa, said: “Our commitment to education was a key factor in our appointment and we’ve already delivered 25 hours of well-received training to highlight the commercial and environmental benefits of recycling. With Biffa’s support, we’ll be able to increase this even further and ensure Birmingham Wholesale Market is at the forefront of innovative waste management.”

Francis Armstrong, regional general manager – Midlands at Biffa, said: “This account win is testament to the strength and innovation that Weir offer, making it a perfect fit for the Biffa brand. The team has done a fantastic job in setting up processes on such a complex site and we look forward to moving forward as a fully integrated Biffa account.”

The contract was officially celebrated at the market’s open day, held on 5th October.
