Waste and recycling company Biffa has again been awarded a position in the prestigious Sunday Times Top Track 100.

The Sunday Times Top Track 100 league table ranks Britain’s 100 private companies with the biggest sales. Top Track 100 is compiled by Fast Track and published in The Sunday Times each June.

Ian Wakelin, CEO Biffa commented on the announcement, “Yet again, Biffa has proved itself worthy of joining the UK’s top 100 businesses and we are delighted to have been recognised for our success. It has been a tough few years but through the hard work and dedication of all of Biffa’s people, we have turned the prospects of the company around.”

Biffa has over 6000 employees and a turnover of [circa] £830 million. Operating in the UK for over a century, today Biffa has the UK’s largest mixed recycling capacity and plays a critical role in the nation’s resource management capabilities.

Biffa has around 2,500 collection vehicles (some of which are powered by biofuel from waste cooking oil as a result of cutting edge in-house research and development), recycles 750,000 tonnes of waste every year and generates 607 million kWh renewable energy.

In terms of customers, Biffa serves 2.5 million households, has 94,000 industrial and commercial (I&C) customers, 42 local authority waste collection contracts and three PFI contracts.

Following its financial restructure, Biffa has achieved a reduction in net debt from £1.1bn to £420m, with new investors committing £75m capital. The company now has a growth strategy rather than a divestment need and has secured its position as the UK’s leading waste management business, whilst performing to plan across all its divisions.

In the last year, Biffa and our customers have won a host of awards from efficiency in resource management to high street recycling, innovative practice and energy recovery. Biffa is continuing to expand its reach, last year launching a consultancy service, R3MC, which offers circular economy advice to the manufacturing industry. Other innovations include CustomerZone, an industry-first online portal for customers that makes it easier to do business with Biffa. Customers can login from anywhere to view historic and current transactions, electronically renew waste transfer notes, request extra collections and pay invoices.

Looking to the future, Wakelin outlines Biffa’s on-going investment strategy, “It is linked closely to the waste hierarchy and circular economy. We are investing significantly in our Industrial and Commercial picking infrastructure to ensure more recyclable materials stay in the loop; and by the end of 2014 we will be converting 25 per cent of that residual (non-recyclable) waste into Refuse Derived Fuel, providing an alternative to fossil fuels and diverting waste from landfill.”
