Biffa has opened a new hazardous waste transfer station in Hertfordshire.

With over six times the annual capacity of the site it replaces, the Welham Green depot boosts Biffa’s operational capability in the Home Counties and South of England – while significantly reducing its carbon footprint and that of its customers.

The site handles hazardous and difficult non-hazardous materials from Biffa’s customers across the manufacturing, retail, utility, logistics and warehousing sectors, and includes a fire-proof zone for flammable waste. The waste is then sent away to be recycled by specialist processors.

Welham Green is part of Biffa’s national network of 24/7 specialist services operations, comprising eight transfer stations, six treatment facilities and one of the UK’s largest tanker fleets, including ADRs - specialist vehicles used for transporting certain hazardous waste

Focusing on sustainable operations, the new site means fewer vehicle journeys, resulting in an annual carbon saving of almost 930 tonnes.

Simon Dale (pictured), Biffa’s Specialist Services Regional General Manager, said: “Our new transfer station at Welham Green means we now have the capacity to offer our customers in the South of England a much simpler and more sustainable solution to their hazardous and difficult non-hazardous waste requirements.

“Having a larger, centralised, hub for our South East operations also means our trucks are travelling fewer miles, resulting in significant fleet-related carbon savings that help reduce our customers’ Scope 3 emissions and contribute to our own journey to net zero.

“Alongside hazardous materials, our specialist services team also handles large-scale construction and event waste, as well as providing food and packaging solutions, and tailored services for manufacturers.”

Steve Dorrington, Process Lead Engineer at Britvic, praised Biffa for expertly managing their liquid waste at Welham Green. He said: "Biffa's team of technical experts seamlessly handled Britvic’s liquid waste, with support in waste management documents, identification and efficient tanker collection and recycling.

“Biffa helped with process alignment and focused on recovering as much of the waste as possible, all while guaranteeing environmental compliance and safe disposal. Their dedication to provide efficient and sustainable waste management has been invaluable to our soft drinks business and process operations."
